What was the Brief?

In 2015, Westfield launched a brand new Grotto experience in association with DreamWorks and Shrek. As part of this, they wanted to hold a launch event to open the Grotto and kick off the Christmas season at Westfield, with entertainment spanning their whole Street area.

Sorcha Productions was asked to supply walkabout entertainment to supplement the hourly shows on stage. The requirement was that there should never be a dull moment all day, with acts non-stop throughout the day.

We were also told that the acts should be Christmas or snow and ice-themed and should be aimed at families, with an interactive element.

How did you meet it?

The biggest challenge at Westfield, as with so many other Christmas events in London, is to stand out from the crowd and entice shoppers of all ages and backgrounds to the centre. We’d like to think that we nailed it…

The stars of the show were high energy drumming band Sparks. Dressed in winter white with cool blue LED drums, they brought a party to the street.

The amazing animatronic polar bear Bjorn travelled from the Arctic to amble around the Street and enjoy being stroked and petted by people of all ages. He is as lifelike a creature as it’s possible to get without cloning, and garnered curious hellos from even the busiest shoppers! Supplemented by some adventuring giant penguins out doing their Christmas shop, it was an animal lover’s perfect Christmas experience!

Our Ice Queen drove around on her chariot barking orders at passers-by – and also to our acro-elves, who delighted crowds with their acrobatic balancing display and general cheekiness. Candy Cane stilt walkers, a stilt tottering high on a bike and traditional red-jacketed toy soldiers drummed their way along the Street, bringing Christmas joy to one and all. If you were lucky, you might have also been accosted by a sparkly golden bauble on roller skates as he dashed by you on his way to the nearest Christmas tree!

Westfield reported an estimated 40% more footfall during the festival and plenty of great comments and feedback from shoppers.

“I just wanted to say thank you for all your help at our event at Westfielfd; all the performers went down brilliantly and everyone was extremely pleased with the selection. As we expected Bjorn and Spark Drummers received several mentions and they really were fantastic so thank you again!”
